It's kinda weird to see such a topic started by me, because I always hated anime and never treated it with enough respect... well, what to expect when all kinds of anime more or less popular in my country for the past years are Sailor Moon and Dragonball. Recently, one of my friends decided to show me something better than that. Knowing my bandwidth limitations, she just sent me a pack of CDs via the state mail... talking honestly, I've watched only one movie from it yet. But... I liked it. In fact, I liked it to the degree I watched it several times, again and again. It's called "On Your Mark". The story is: future, the police seizures some kind of a sect settled in the middle of a city. In the basement they discover a winged girl about 18 year old, chained and unconscious. They free her and help her - I thought they will let her go right away, but no - they take her to some kind of a secret lab and start to examine her. Poor hostage just goes from one hands to another. Two policemen participated in the seizure, try to discover everything possible about where she's being kept, perform an assault on that lab, steal the girl, take her outside the city, to her home town, and let her go there. The movie is very short, only 6 minutes long, and nobody says a word there, only a song plays, but it's very clear without words, and full of events and emotions. There are also several plain beautiful moments with that girl, where she flies in the sky like a bird. ^^ If you want to watch it, here is the link to the movie (120 Mb). And thanks to Rudwolf for showing me it

I don't watch much anime, mostly due to the fact that I don't enjoy a lot of it. But this is such a touching video, the last scene nearly moved me to tears. The music is also very good.

Dagdamor, I'm not much of an anime fan either. I like the style, of course, but most of the cartoons I've been shown... well... kinda sucked:-) But I'll try and recommend some titles I liked, and I'll explain, what is so wonderful about them. First of all, Full Metal Alchemist. The story takes place in a mysterious kingdom that slightly resembles Victorian England. Two little brothers live with their mother in a house in the country and study alchemy. That alchemy of theirs is very different from what we are used to call alchemy: no chemicals, no retorts - all you have to do is to draw a weird-looking ring on the ground, put some material in the centre of the ring and put your hands on the ring. Then the material goes all puff and crack and transforms into whatever you wanted to create. The most important thing is to make sure that you have enough material... and that you don’t perform human transmutation. But the boys did. Their mother died from some disease and left them all alone (their father died long before), so they decided to make themselves a new mother – to create her body and put here soul in it. Needless to say, they failed. Moreover, the elder brother, Edward, lost his arm and leg, and the younger one, Alfonso, lost his entire body – his soul was trapped in the huge metal armour suit. And their mother... what they created couldn’t be called human. So they left their home and went to a big city to join the State Military Alchemists and to find the way to undo what they had done and to get their bodies back as they used to be. I really liked the movie. The style of drawing is cute and somewhat kawaii, but the plot is very and very impressive. The film is sort of cruel – I don’t mean there’s lots of blood and gore (though there are some), it just that there we can see some perfectly nice and appealing people that turn out to be perfectly disgusting beasts – maniacs, crazy scientists who sacrifice their children to go on with their research, fanatics on a killing spree, soulless bureaucrats – the whole bunch of bastards you want to bash in the head till the brains flow from their ears. The cartoon left me sort of depressed – and you know, I appreciate it. Worth seeing, it is. See the AlchemistsNow, BLEACH. In a little Japanese town of Karakura, lives a 15-year-old boy who is capable of seeing and talking to the ghosts (in my country, we call this ability schizophrenia;-). So, he lives with his father and two younger sisters in a nice house combined with a clinic, protects memorial places from vandals and studies un a school until one night a black butterfly flies into his bedroom. “Wow,” thinks the boy but the things become even “wower” as the butterfly turns into a girl with katana wearing kimono. As they chat, the girl tel the boy that she is a Shinigami – a Grim Reaper of some sort. Shinigami travel the Earth looking for free wandering souls and sending them to Soul Society – a vague analogue of Heaven. They also fight Hollows – corrupt souls that hunt and destroy wandering souls and people with supernatural abilities – like the boy and his family. And this very moment the house is visited by a Hollow. The fellow behaves really badly: it swears, roars, destroys property and nearly kills the whole boy’s family. The Shinigami fails to slay the bastard, so she lends all her divine power to the boy, so that he can finish the job and protect his family. And hell he does! The family is protected, the Hollow is slain, but there is a problem. The Shinigami girl can’t get her powers back and return to her own world, so she has to stay on the Earth in a faux body and keep a low profile, because she’s commited a serious crime by giving her power to a mortal human, and the punishment for such transgression is disintegration. This means that the MPs are sure to come and arrest her sooner or later. But her new friend is not going to let them ndo her any harm, even if he has to become a Shinigami himself and turn the whole Soul Society upside down. Because he owes her one, you know... and maybe there’s some more reasons. The retold plot may sound kind of dull, but the cartoon itself is exhilarating. There are lots of characters, each one with their very own personality (I especially liked Zaraki Kenpachi – whoa, man, that guy is the hell of a leader. And a tragic character, too). Their reasons and personalities may be funny, bizarre or simple, and you can never tell what awaits the heroes in the next episode. And you know, the red-haired girl with a leek singing “Yak-tsup-tsop” is taken from this very cartoon:-) I think BLEACH is an absolute must-see if you want to have some fun and enjoy some quality anime. See them guys:-)And, finally, the cartoon with a bizarre name Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu, which can be translated as “The jungle was all sunny, then came Guu”. In a little village in the very heart of jungle lives a family of two: a mum called Weda who sometimes goes hunting and spends most of her time drinking and goofing off, and her son Hale who runs the house, worries about things and generally cares too much for a 10-year-old kid. They live rather peacefully until one evening Weda comes home one over the eight and bring with her a very cute but strange-looking girl called Guu and says that because she has no parents, she’s going to live with them. And here it begins... Guu really is bloody weird. First of all, she is not cute at all. Well, she may look cute sometimes if she wants, but generally she wears a blank look that scares poor Hale. She is mischievous, sarcastic, she cracks grim jokes and eats things. She eats anything – bananas, live pokutes (that’s kind of animal), TV-set, Hale’s pet bird and even Hale himself! And, to make matters worse, inside her stomach there is the whole parallel dimension which looks like something between an amusement park and a mental asylum! What is Guu? Why is she here? What does she want? Is what she wants harmful for Hale and the world around him? See the cartoon to find out! Here they are!. So, these are the animes I like. I hope you find these comments useful:-)

Okay, stay composed Mat... *shudder* ... I'd rather lick a stinging netle than watch an anime movie. I've witnessed a few anime movies, and what I call 'Anime soap', such as Pokemon etc. Among these movies I've watched clips from 'Ghost in the Shell', only because it was what inspired the 'Matrix' films. Despite this, I've waited 40 mins to download this 6 minute clip that Serge has shown, so I will review everything I see in two parts; Mature Opinionated Comments, and Matias' Pyramid Mind Comments. ... *watches movie* Okay. Now: Mature Opinionated CommentsThe music was well suited to the situation. The assault actions where indeed rather realistic, and the animation was well thought out. The story line was... difficult. Especialy when they started flying in a truck. But all the while a moving tale and nice plot idea. Matias' Pyramid Mind CommentsWas unlike any amine move I have seen before, this wasnt as bad as previously expected. The begining was strange. Looked like middle eastern troops where taking over the Klu-Klux-Klan. I think in the future, I'd use a more promising car than an old Alfa Romeo Giulietta. But it didnt become misplaced in the environment. I could ridicule the choice of weapon too, the fact that the Galil is less accurate than a water pistol. But I think I'm missing the major points. Unlike other anime movies, I was dedicated to watching it to the end, finding out what would happen. The characters where interesting in a silent way, and the plot unfolded quickly without getting too draggy. Speaking of the plot, I dont understand the end of it. I thought my media player was skipping rather badly when I realised different things started to happen. In conclusion, it didnt taste half as bad as eating poisonous plants because it certainly wasnt a waste of time, but its not something I could see myself becoming interested in. [end review mode]

and you?ll never think bad about high quality japanese anime. Really deeply touching and entertaining... I quote everything Cargo said, those are some very fine examples of great animation with really deep and interesting storylines. Plus, there are some wingies! About what others have already suggested, they're all nice series, very nice, but yo uhave to dedicate them a LOT of time to watch them properly. Naruto is now over 170 episodes, bleach is over 110, and they're still going... so they have to be dedicated a lot of time. Personally, if you liked the "winged" theme, i cannot but recommend "Haibane Renmei". As for movies, there are just so much... but basicially, everythign done from Miyazaki deserves a lot of attention. The short movie you posted, Dag, comes from his animation studio.

I remember my friend having a Cowboy bebop album and it was very random Fun to listen to though On a light note, I saw this awhile ago and I couldn't stop laughing. It's a parody of the Cowboy Bebop song at the beginning, using Bill Cosby impersonations from the Simpsons http://cosbybebop.ytmnd.com/

heh, yeah Raven, Cats on Mars is one of the Cowboy Bebop songs. it is the theme song for Edward, the female computer hacker. I prefer songs like "Jupiter Jazz PT. 2" and "Call me Call me". actually "Call me Call me is my theme for life. it fits with my personality. (stupid internet surveys)

I only started watching Sailor Moon in order to understand Steven Scott's Sailor Moon/ Simpsons Xover. Another anime I am fond of is Outlaw Star, (kinda like Firefly except its animated and features a cat-girl) another is Final Fantasy (Advent Childeren that is not The Spirits Within which sucked serious balls) another one I loved was Spirited Away, some of the best animation ever in that film.

Hayao Miyazaki is an anime movie genius. He has a ton of movies that anyone would love if they're an anime fan or not. I should know, my mom hates anime with a passion. But when she took me to see Spirited Away, she loved it. So my theory on alot of things is that you should really watch it before you drop it. To try it a few times because there's some not-good anime out there. Because you'd be suprised upon how many peole say they hate anime/manga because it gives them 'headaches' ro is annoying. I've influenced a ton of my friends into anime and manga and they love it now. ^^

SimpRealPersonally, if you liked the "winged" theme, i cannot but recommend "Haibane Renmei". I've watched Haibane Renmei, but, to my surprise, didn't really liked it. Yes, it's "winged" and has a nice idea and plot. But it's so slow... each 20-minute episode can be easily described with several words, almost nothing happens there and I, being a very impatient person, was unable to watch how Rakka just looks at you, doing nothing for half the minute, then suddenly jumps and does "Aah!", and you mutter "If she does that once again, I'll strangle her!"

I rewatched "Metropolis" with some friends today. I really really recommend it. The main character looks a lot like Lisa and the whole cartoon is, if a bit difficult at first, a little gem of animation!

Watched "Howl's Moving Castle" several days (maybe a week) ago. Hmm well... I can't say this anime has impressed me much, despite the fact it's by Ghibli. The beginning was interesting, a young girl turned into an old woman and trying to live in that role, that castle with portals, the yet another view at your ability to fly. The scene with that witch and the main heroine climbing up these stairs has made me laugh. I also liked that scene when Howl was acting childish and immature, it was unexpected yet believable, nice that they showed that even the most powerful magicians have imperfections. But everything else... I haven't noticed any straight plot in the movie. Everything that happened after first 20 minutes wasn't making any sense to me... to pretend Howl's mother to convince the Emperor to dismiss him from the army? Come on, this sounds idiotic even for a russian lazybones like me, for typical japanese this should make even less sense To have such powers and be unable to stop the war, even to protect people from it? The ending, when that scarecrow has turned into a prince and promised to bring peace to the earth, has plain disappointed me. Dunno, maybe I'm just not an anime person... and the translation also didn't help. The DVD had only one audio track (with the single-voice dub, and the translator was missing half of the phrases), and subtitles were only in english. To watch a movie, hearing stingy translation on the background of japanese speech, while reading english text... that's not easy at all. I still don't regret I watched it, the beginning was very promising, and it had its funny moments.

I came across this Anime style drawing of a simpsons scene a few weeks back. It has quite a few well known characters on the couch. Some are really good, while others are not so good. Lisa can be seen Bottom left holding hands with milhouse and looking kinda uncomfortable. bart is middle top and im my opionion could of been a bit better. Kinda more what they may look like in real life. http://www.cineatp.com/archivos/los-simpsons-manga.phpDunno if anyone has seen it, I did a quick search and didnt see it posted. Also seen the "original" it was designed from: http://i3.tinypic.com/34s049c.jpg

I saw "Metropolis" and I must say that was pretty unusual The feeling of something grand that happen in the film in addition with a great jazz soundtrack makes you to feel in very unusual way. With a perfectly insane ideas to mix all known styles, epochs and tech levels that is typical for the genre this film has catched me by it's sincerity and light grief. The main question for Tima to understand who she is was a perfect end for her line. When she has fallen and died... That scene with remainings of her was thruly heartbreaking for me, and aside with a feeling of doom that expected through all the movie Still I must say that I'm not anime-guy at all and to see "Metropolis" was a big luck for me as I tend to think. I'm for such deep-sense and slightly griveous films. "Ghost In A Shell" That film was really something of a high class. The story of a cyborg woman was great and to unite with a program of artificial intelligence for her in the end was something really outstanding. All the film has leaved me with a sense of light discomfort but with admiration for creators and artists that made it. Especially I do like the "realism" in every instance that they permanently involve in the movie. Be it exaggerated amount of details and shadows, the details of surrounding like haze, weather and such, or be it those "techical" questions like giant recoil of armor-piercing gun, the crumling ferroconcrete or something like this... And the music digressions when heroine realises something again and again was great, the foating shadow of ghost-aircraft, the megalopolis, the water trams - that was very atmospherical.

I don't watch much anime, but a good anime movie I saw once was "Kiki's Delivery Service". I saw the English version when I was about 7 years old, and just recently saw it again. It's a good movie, and I'd recommend it.

Nice reviews Yggdrasil, i totally agree with you about Ghost in the Shell. In my opinion still the best product anime has offered in the kast years, surely a classic. See if you can find the sequel too, called "Ghost in the shell: Innocence". Imho if you watch it with attention is even more mesmerizing.
