I guess this topic is needed though... anyway:

- This forum was officially open October 23, 2006.
- It uses forum engine called SMF (Simple Machines Forum), version 1.1 RC3.
- It also uses my own add-on for supporting nice links (no "index.php" and such).
- All attachments are stored in the separate folder, it's open for browsing if needed.

What is still have to be done or fixed (and we're working on it with Marco):

1. Forum headline image.
2. Nicer forum icons.
3. Simpsons smileys. Smile
4. Forum Statistics link on the bottom of the main page doesn't work.
5. GZIP compression works really weird, sometimes it makes the page to pause for several seconds.
6. Image attachments are downloading instead of displaying.
7. Change the look of certain icons like "new", "online" etc.

I guess this list will grow eventually... if you have a suggestion or want to report a bug, please post here. Just understand that if you're suggesting a new feature, and it's hard to make, we can't promise we will do that.

About mods... to install dozens of mods, we have to be in need of dozens of mods. Right now this forum needs interesting discussions and posts much more. Smile

Should just be able to make a code thingie... where you have to enter random four digit numbers in able to register. Seems to work...

Just several words about attachments...

SMF supports attachments thumbnailing (i.e. displaying small version of an image attachment in the topic), but I'm still not sure if we have to turn this feature on. First, all thumbnails are stored into the same directory as the attachments themselves, so if I'll enable the feature, this directory will turn into a mess. Secondly, thumbnails will make the page heavier and some of the members (me including) are still using slow dial-ups. Besides, thumbnails rarely look good after automatic resizing, especially for the sketches, so I'm unsure.

I'd prefer to leave it as is (i.e. simple links to the attachments, no thumbnails). It looks tidy and loads fast.

We didn't put particular restrictions about sigs and avatars because as for the other rules, we prefer to leave it to your judgement.
Personally, i don't like seeing posts where 99% of the user space is taken by a huge, multipicture, flashing, "ugly" signature.  Confused

This is totally not the case though, so you're free to keep it (and links are a-ok!)  Tongue

A Patch has been released for 1.1 RC3 (and 1.0.9). This patch will address a cross-site scripting vulnerability in the search function, even if the board is VERY small we encourage you guys to install it, the easiest way is in your package manager.

I've installed the patch, and I must admit it was quite easy and convenient thing to do. But Gary, please, don't post about forum vulnerabilities publicly. I've installed the patch, and I must admit it was quite easy and convenient thing to do. But Gary, please, don't post about forum vulnerabilities publicly.

Hey, it's not exactly a serious issue. You cant really lose any data. And by that logic then Compuart & the whole of the SMF team is working for the hackers too... Remember though I am UNABLE to install the patch myself on my forum because I'm not using RC3 or 1.0.8, you just get a patch I have to make a full upgrade to the latest CVS and thus install all 30 of my mods again. Consider yourself lucky. Tongue

It doesnt matter if an announcement about a patch is available publicly or not, as long as you install it, its fine. It's not as bad as phpBB, SMF 1.1 has only had 2 patches made for it in its life, and SMF 1.0 has had 9, phpBB 2  has had twenty-one patches. Tongue

I just noticed SMF also has RSS, but the RSS only shows the last 5 posts. Could this be changed to 10?

Sure, but you have to customize it manually.
Just change your subscription URL from www.lisa-simpson.net/rss-xml to www.lisa-simpson.net/rss-xml/10 (or any other number you want), and it should work. Smile

It wouldnt really be hard to do. But be sure you place ALL edited (images, templates, whatever) into a new theme folder (you can create a copy of the default in your admin center). This will make upgrading much easier. I predict 1.1 Final will be out soon. Trust me. Tongue

Another little change...

I just changed the default theme settings - it will affect guests, all future members and all already registered members who never edited their preferences in the "Profile" page. The changes are:

- "Return to topics after posting by default" is now on.
- "Use quick reply on topic display" is now on.
- "Save a copy of each Personal Message in my outbox by default" is now on.
- "Show a popup when you receive new personal messages" is now on.

I believe it will be more convenient... of course you still can change these settings for your account. Smile

I decided to move the forum to another hosting, because DreamHost seem to be buggy/slow lately.
If you can see this message, then forum's new IP address was already propagated for you, so everything's okay. Tongue

In another news... I just created new forum section - Lisa's Friends, for discussing all websites/forums/other projects maintained by members. I didn't expect to see so many threads about that on LTS, perhaps we should keep them all together Tongue

Just to get more technicall, SMF 1.1 Final has been released. Tongue you might wanna upgrade. Tongue

The CAPTCHA has been fixed to make it easier, and there have been a couple of options to combat PM spam, along with a whole load of other bugs.

Since you have (what is technically now a mod) installed, you're better off using the UPGRADE pacakge on the download page.

Or you can take the quicker way and use Webinstall.php Tongue

Well, I might consider update, but not right now. When the new software comes out, it's always better to wait some time before upgrading to it - let other people test it in the real circumstances.
