I have often wondered, especially on a multinational forum such as this one, and on my own forum too, how people come up with thier nicknames and usernames.

It may be interesting to hear what your name means, background behind it, or weather it is a private thing for you only. A real name, a nickname from school, or a dedication to someone... all would be interesting to hear. And for names in different languuages what is a translation ect. Even if the names meaning is private to you it would be interesting to know this if not the reason why.

I shall start with my name. I use 2 main usernames on the Internet, my gaming name is "Fragsey" and my other more formal name is MPfreeUK.

The name on this forum "Empethree" is a mashup of MPfreeUK and the word empathy. I found it nicer to use for my art stuff than the other 2 names. MPfreeUK seems far too formal a name to use, and Fragsey is well, to gamerish. Indeed you will often see me in the chat room as MPfreeUK or on the Voice chat as Fragsey.

MPfreeUK is the name of my radio station. It is an obvious mash up of "mp3" and started out as a music file sharing service. I started the radio station part of it back in 1999 as a sister station to older stations EJND and EjackNet Radio which i started in 1998.

Ejack14 in turn was my original AOL screen name. (it still is my AIM/Ichat name). Ejacknet changed name into my business EJN Media which ran the stations and my web design company, which sadly only now exists in name. (i sometimes use ejnmedia as a username too).

Fragsey is taken for the gaming term for a kill, a frag. My original online gaming name was "Major Frags" as i played World War 2 FPS games. i joined a clan and became [FuN]Frags, then [FuN]Fragsey. I then co-founded a world of Warcraft guild called Ascendance and am currently [AsC]Fragsey, which also can be seen in chat if my irc client drops and reconnects.

So my usernames don't generally reflect my real name "Carl Jackson" apart from Ejack which was supposed to be Cjack, but the name was taken on the AOL system and i thought the sugestion "Ejack" sounded far funnier.

LOL at Ejack.

I mainly use my name for most of my forum or other internet related stuff. I used to use Zeke Prower or Zeke Windrunner, both of which were names of my characters that I made up for my stories. Zeke Prower was originally a fox who ended up turning into a wolf when I in real life went to an Indian ceremony and they gave me the name Wolf Windrunner. The first name was because my actions and my mentality projected the spirit of the wolf and the windrunner part came from my other spirit totem signs.

But now I just tend to use my name, or at least part of it for my screen names.

Well, my name is no mystery, since it's my first name, and I try to use it in all forums where I'm registering. If it's not available, I add my surname as well. I don't really have a nickname, and I never got one as a kid as well (apart from some not-so-nice names I got from school bullies and the like Tongue ). My mom and my brother call me "Andrew" occasionally (I don't really know where that came from), but I'm not that fond of it, and I really hate "Andi", which is a German short form for "Andreas", but only folks who don't know me call me that now and then, and they always get an evil eye from me for that. Interesting topic.

I think it's pretty obvious where my nick comes from... I use a lot of aliases online. George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Christopher Lee, David Gilmour, Clint Eastwood, Roger Waters... yeah. You get the idea.

For the record, my real name is Adam.

My nickname is a name of a character from some old fantasy book I've read many years ago. I don't even remember the plot of that book now... but the name I liked, and used it as the nickname. Much later, I found out that DagdaMor has another meaning - Dagda Mor is an old Celtic god of plenty and fertility. LOL, that's definitely not about me... Wink

Dag
I've always wanted to know where you got your nickname. Tongue

Now about mine... In the beginning of 2006 I discovered Simpsons Realities. I found out through that site that there was a fanfic about Lisa having a twin sister called Suzy. I liked this idea and the name...

At about the same time a couple of friends of mine started playing Counter-Strike again. Because I'm not a very good tactical shooter player, I decided to pick a girls name as a nickname so I wouldn't have to read 'n00b' and 'blocker' all the time in the chat. Those horny little buggers actually don't mind you team killing them if they think they're dealing with a girl. The nick I chose was "Suzy"...

A while later I discovered GFWC. It was the source of most art that could be found on SR. I was quite happy with this find, but I had to register to view the attachments. I didn't think I would ever post anything there and I needed a nickname fast, so I decided to go with the nickname Suusje, which means "small Suus". ("Suus" is a Dutch version of "Suzy".) I kind of regretted choosing that nickname after I started posting art on GFWC, but now I really don't mind anymore.

I also have 2 other nicknames I use a lot: Paddixx and The_Horrorist. "Paddixx" has a long history and if anyone is interested, I'll post it here.
And I got "The_Horrorist" from my winamp playlist. It's the stage name of a music producer. (Wikipedia)

I also have a lot of wackier nicknames I mostly use for LAN parties, including stuff like n00dle||s0Up, General Zod and KAASHAKXZOR. These mostly come up when you mix a saturday evening, beer, friends and games together. Tongue

Hehe, I'll keep that in mind if I ever decide to play a first person shooter with my non-existant skills. "Lisa" would be appropriate, I guess. Wink

Interesting subject this, I've often wondered about other people's nicknames on this board...

Mine is derived from a nickname I had as a little kid, my mum used to call me "sleepy starfish" when I yawned (reasons unknown), and it stuck, some people close to me still call me "starfish" now, they usually say it is like a term of endearment of sorts.

But TBH, ultimately the main reasons I chose it for this board are partly because I am a big fan of Patrick Star  Star (from SpongeBob) and also partly because of the recurring Simpsons joke about Lisa's hairstyle being "starfish-shaped". Lisa

Well... my first Nickname ever was "KANG"... I liked this green alien very much and he got his name because of the sound >kang<, therefor I wrote it in capital letters.  Tongue

The nickname CargoOfDarkness I am wearing now is the name of my spiritual son Cargo Of Darkness. The deepest charakter I?ve ever created for my novel Rail Of Destiny.

*LOL* @ Andreas... "Andi"... I love to call you that... ^-^

Very interesting topic. I have wondered about a lot of the forum names here. Smile

Casper is the name of a skateboard trick, otherwise known as the 'casper slide', most famously performed by Rodney Mullen. One science lesson, my mate was playing skating with a ruler in his fingers, he was trying a casper slide, while yelling it out in his own satifaction. As I turned to him, he said "Yeah.. suits you that name".
Thought nothing of it at first. Then joined GFWC (for the second time), and needed a nickname so... va-la.

My previous nickname was 'Matias', though, my real name is Mathew. Like Andreas I suppose, I hated being called 'Maty' or 'Jonesy', so... Matias stuck. Tongue
Other nicknames include 'Bladmapples' (YouTube), and 'Mr Ficken' (All steam games).

Bladmapples was a random set of letters typed in E-Jay voice producer, similar to Microsoft Sam. I'm proud to admit its my brothers own made word, which I stole from him. Tongue Search Google for 'Bladmapples', and I'll be there!

Gazmanafc - Comes in two parts. And is once again the primary username I use now. Gazman is an old nickname I was called when I was in school, by a friend (he was the only one to call me that) and afc stands for Arsenal Football Club, the team I support.

AwwLilMaggie - A Homer quote from Virtual Springfield. "Awww Little Maggie, whatever happened to you.... oh yeah" Nick Wright suggested it for AIM and I used it elsewhere.

ALM - Is the shorthand version of AwwLilMaggie that was used by various SMF Team members.

Aah, intresting topic because I'm sure many people wonder why they come up with usernames and  pseudonyms and such.

SpringfieldHorror- Kind of a mix of a place I would have liked to live, and my art style. It doesn't make any sense unless someone would explain it to you, I know. XD

Rizzy/Rizz/Rizzi- Is my pen name. Like CLAMP, or PEACH-PIT, it just a creative little name. It was originally from a radio DJ here in town who she went by as DJ RiZZA. Yes, with a lowercase 'i'.
And after I heard that name, I instantly loved it named a character of mine after that, and just played it up a bit. Wink

I found the concept of calculated chaos appealed directly to my nature. Wonderfully erratic, but there is a method to this madness.

Interesting topic, I'll write about Omochao at first.
The first forum I registered was sonic the hedgehog-dedicated. As almost everyone else there I wanted to choose a character from the Sonic video games as my nickname. The only one I knew back then that wasn't already chosen was Omochao, a bothersome robot chao which guides you through the tutorial of my first Sonic game. When I registered @ another Sonic forum I used chichaaaooo as my introduction thread title (Omochao can talk but normal chao can't and chichaaaooo is hello in chao language) everyone found it funny, so I used Omochao for the next 6 months or so everywhere I registered.
Now Mal?fix: I registered in an Ast?rix community then, and didn't want to take Omochao as my nickname because it was Sonic-related. One day before someone who lives in my neighbourhood and gave me lots of nicknames in elementary school called me Malafax once again. That name then jumped into my mind when I registered, but i wanted to alter it so that it ends with -ix. That's the origin of Mal?fix.
When Malefix or Mal?fix is already taken I use Mal?fixOmo, Mal?fix94 (birthday 13.5.1994) or Mal?fixOV (V for Violantis, that comes from a joke about favorite colors, too complicated to post here) as my nickname.
