The topic I should have created long ago. Tongue
This is a public poll where everyone can vote for the Art Contest pictures they liked the most. You can choose as many options as you like (just don't vote for all 16 pics, it will make your vote useless).
When we finish judging the pictures, the amounts of votes collected will be used together with the judges' grades to calculate the contest winners.
Opinions are not necessary, but still welcome Smile

I cast 8, 1 in each category. They're all very good, but someone's gotta win, right?
Personal favorite: Beb's Zoidberg, Divinity of Seas and Oceans! Alot going on in that picture. Marge (Supreme Divinity) and Jessica (Divinity of Love) are tied in a close second.

I also went for one vote per category as this seems to make the most sense given that it's a team contest.   Some of the choices were extremely difficult to make!

Since I did some of the pics, I didn't vote per category, just went through and ticked off things I particularly liked, which worked out to about half anyway. Smile

I ask everyone, who didn't vote yet, to do that ASAP, because I'm closing the voting tonight and opening the topic for nearly-the-last step of this contest - picture judgement and grades posting.

Well, so far yes, the Simpsons Team got the most votes as you can see from the tables in here:
http://www.lisa-simpson.net/topic/648.msg17800#msg17800

(yay! Big Grin )

But there are still some judges (me included) that need to cast their votes for every pic so that the judgement will be final Wink

Since i'm als a judge, i'll post my reviews here, with the grades i've assigned to each picture, then Dag will "implement them" in the voting tables. We're almost done, yay!
I hope i was fair to everyone, i ask some people in the futurama tam especially to forgive me if i seemed to "not get" some pictures, but i tried to put everything in my reviewing. Smile

Simpsons Team:
1 Ilyich -  Supreme Divinity (Marge)

The overall impact of this picture is, strangely, less than the sum of it parts. At first glance it is a good picture, it has nice colors, very interesting coloring technique (almost watercolour) Marge is pretty on model and Maggie is cute. But giving it just a few minutes of attention, one cannot but be amazed at the quantity and quality of details putted in it, both in coloring and in ideas! first of all, the whole concept is the best in this competition imo, supreme divinity couldn’t have been portrayed in a better way. Then all the details like the difference in shading between the sun and night parts, the “golden” effect on Marge’s skin, the way Maggie clamps like a kitten around Marge’s arm, the reflexes in the water, binky, Marge’s indu-like jewelry and clothing. Everything is perfect, almost: A couple of nitpicks only about her feet looking a bit off and the knee that detracts a bit from Marge’s “goddesly” figure, but itherwise, this is a perfect opus in everything and even surpassing my every expectation. The more I look at it, the more I like it. 10 is my final grade.

2 El Barto – Divinity of Seas and Oceans (Homer)

First thing that comes to mind seeing the pic is …. How come that Homer isn’t eating those dolphins? Big Grin But actually, even if the picture is not bad, Homer is well drawn and there is a nice touch of architecture (it looks like Homer, as a divinity should, resides in a very tall tower above an infinite ocean), this is the main problem with the picture. There’s not much happening, not a real “reason” that makes Homer that kind of divinity, he’s just sitting there looking godly (as much as he can Big Grin ). On a positive note, his similarity with Neptune is well recreated with the tonaca and the beard and the setting sun in the background gives an interesting mood to the whole. There is not much to comment otherwise, there are some interesting details (such as the dolphin shaped head of chair) but others are quite plain and could have used a bit more of work.
I give this picture a 5,5 because it didn’t quite grasp the meaning of the competition, but technically it’s sufficient and it *does* have some background in it. I’m sure that more work on the details could have made it a completely different picture. Better luck next time Smile

3 Opus – Lisa - Divinity of Sky

I must admit that I was 99% that whoever would have done the Lisa picture, will have gone for 1) sky and 2) winged, but I didn’t expect that Lisa wouldn’t have been the winged one! So I’ve got to give props to Opus for this choice.
Technically, the picture is surely above average, with a very nice rendition of the clouds, and the gryphon is really well drawn in all the detail. It’s interesting that he looks majestic and aggressive instead of something cute and fluffy. Lisa looks, of course, very cute.
As with Elbarto’s picture, this one suffers a bit from a lack of “particularity” to the picture, of grasping the competition’s spirit. Lisa is a proper divinity (even if I would have liked seeing more detail on her) but it’s not clear “why” she is, aside from galloping the clouds on a gryphon Smile
I think a 7  is in order because of a good technical level taken a back by a pretty simple idea made more original with the choice of not giving wings to Lisa, but giving her a majestic looking and surely god-worthy beast of myth.

4 Sheffa – Bart – Divinity of Fire

Bart has been called many times a little hell raiser, so the choice to use him as divinity of fire is quite good. The eyesight at first is very good, mostly because of a well thought chromatic choice. The idea of the setting is also pretty good, mixing a famous “flashback” from the Springfield Gorge with a new and definitely god-worthy erupting volcano. I’m not sure the extra arms on Bart work like they did work on Marge, but his fire-hair is definitely a great touch.
Technically the picture is *very* good, full of nice detail especially in the fire, so difficult to render believably in 2d, yet so well done. The cinder-burning sky is ominous. Incidentally, Bart looks a bit too “normal” with his “happy” colors and plain clothing, so it’s him to look a bit out of the general mood of the picture, I would’ve gone for some more tattered or “cool looking” clothes for him. But it’s a minor nitpick, and because of a well thought setting and a definitely good technical level, I’m giving this picture a 7,4.

5 Nosferaty – Maude Flanders – Divinity of Earth

I am sure that I’m missing some symbolism in here: let me explain… the pic has something very elusive to it, mostly in the for of that unicorn. I can’t decide if it’s an old unicorn dying in Maude’s arms or if she is just cuddling him… basing on the answer to this  question, the whole idea behind the picture could change, as in the second case it would mean that as earth, Maude is the divinity of all things living and thus, dying.
I like the choice of making Maude’s dress looking like it’s the earth itself, or coming out of the earth: this makes Maude look definitely like something more than human, and is a good addition to the “divinity” theme of the competition.
Technically the picture is good, the earth fading into the distance, as I said Maude’s “melting” with the green of the earth, the pebbles in the foreground, and the two flowers are all a pleasure to look at. I am unsure about the unicorn, I cannot decide if it looks “wrinkly” because of its age or just because of a drawing style. But I like how he “emanates” light, and anatomically speaking, he is drawn quite well (maybe the body looks a bit too big in comparison to the head.
I was very doubtful grading this picture for the reasons I expressed before, so I choose to go a middle way and grade this picture with a 6,8

6 Simpreal – Jessica Lovejoy – Divinity of Love

I won’t grade this on a personal idea for balance’s sake, so I’ll just give it a vote that will not change the average that comes out from the other judges. I’ll just say that I’m very proud that I brought it to completion and that I manage to make it look close to like I wanted from the start.
Since as of now the average of the votes from the other judges is 8,299 so I’m averaging it to a 8,3. So i grade myself as other judges do: 8,3

7 DB – Burns – Divinity of Underworld

I guess that one must be a fan of H.R.Giger (or at least know his creature work, see Aliens) to fully enjoy and or understand this picture. Luckily for DB, I am! The fact of the picture being in black and white, shaded just in pencil, is both a minus AND a plus. It’s a minus because it must compete with colored pictures, it’s a plus because a black and white pic is the only way to give out the atmosphere wanted for this picture.
The choice of Mister Burns is good (as he often is seen struggling with death in the show), there is not much going on in the picture, but the way that Burns is being portrayed works incredibly well, technically impressive (considering all shading has been done by hand) and with a good amount of detail both in the creature-burns and in the background.
This one is a picky to judge. Competition wise, the pic is not funny or has nothing “interesting” going on, unlike that other underworld pic, but the choice of character is perfect, the handiwork is as I said impressive, and the Gigerian mood is to me a definitive giveaway.. I can really picture this gigerian burns to be Divinity of Underworld.
My final grade is a 7,8.

8 CCD – Itchy – Divinity of War

For being a divinity of War, Itchy looks quite cuddly! Jokes aside though, overall this is a well thought picture, although in my opinion the possibilities given by Itchy and War and God put together were not made use of to their full potential Smile The “robotic” arms on Itchy look a bit weird and they don’t seem to have a particular meaning to the pic, aside from giving Itchy a bio-mechanical look. His clothing is a tad plain and the sword he’s carrying looks a bit undersized for a God of war Wink But the idea of having him standing as a giant on the world, and as it looks, about to stab it with his sword brings the picture back into “on topic-ness”. I also like that under him the world is going on fire, an epic and doomsday imaginary that goes well with the theme of the picture.
The white background is a bit off-putting, but nothing that detracts from the whole picture. There’s nothing much else to say about this, if not that it’s a well drawn and colored pic, with an interesting idea, but sadly not used to its whole potential.
I give this picture a grade of 6,3.

Futurama Team Reviews:

1 Samus – Nibbler – Supreme Divinity

I definitely like the choice of character for this picture, and I like the daring, but appropriate perspective with which the picture has been drawn. Nibbler looks almighty indeed, especially with the nice touch of the third eye shedding light. I recognize only one of the objects at the stairs though, so if there is a “hidden” meaning to the picture given by those details, I am afraid I am missing it.
The pic has a wonderful eyesight to it, the light and dark contrast working very well, the tone of the colors gives everything a very “big scale” mood. I can honestly say that the picture manages to give out the “magnificency” that a supreme deity should emanate. So, because of the good choice of character, the nice mood of the pic, and the funny choice to put cuddly and little Nibbler in this role, I’m giving this a 7,5.

2 Beb – Dr. Zoidberg – Divinity of Seas and Oceans

Together with Ilyich this is imho the best picture of the whole competition, as expected Beb lived up to her reputation by crafting a funny, original and technically perfect piece. Where to start? Zoidberg was of course one of the easiest choices to make for seas divinity given his “heritage”, but it wasn’t easy to think of an original way to make it.
Beb managed to choose a moment where both the “divinity” of the character and his well known starvation for attention complement each other perfectly causing of course fear and ruckus in his fellow teammates (poor Zoidberg, he fails even with godly powers).
Being the choice of moment not enough, this picture has an overall perfect technical level to it. It’s impressive how everything is real looking : the water especially, I can’t stop being in awe at it.. the darker blue of the wave with the sun shafts peeking through at the thinnest, the foam of the tide breaking. All the characters running away are funny looking, everyone with its personal quirks. Details, details, lots of details floating around and making the eye happy. I have *no* complaints about this picture and *no* nitpicks to give. It’s a perfect picture. 10 !

3 Dj Fry – Amy – Divinity of Sky

This picture rivals Ilyich’s Marge for originality and the inventive base idea, in my opinion. Having Amy “painting” the sky over a grey room that seems to be a nuclear shelter works incredibly well and is a worthy “divinity” like – occupation for her. Definitely this picture follows very well the plot requested by the competition. Technically, it’s a mixed bag:
The sky is masterfully rendered, it looks definitely good, the clouds becoming more white and blurry as they approach the sun.. all is very realistic looking! The problem is that it’s imo too varying on  purple. If the divinity of Sky is supposed to be also of ecology or even nature (as this pic tells me) I would expect a more blue and cerulean clear sky, maybe contrasting with a greenish and ill-looking “waste area” in the middle. This imho could have made the picture so much more full of meaning!
Nothing bad to say about Amy herself. Cute looking like she should, with a more appropriate hairstyle and same-color dress as the sky.
I really like this picture , especially the starting idea i like it definitely a lot, enough to make me overlook the "purplish sky" thing and I would grade it 8,2 !

4 Predator – Fry – Divinity of Fire

This picture mostly suffers from the same problems as the divinity of seas from Elbarto does. Yes, theres definitely something extra-human going on for Fry there, but there isn’t anything special anything aside for Fry looking fire-y. There’s not a particular plot or a reason why Fry would take such a role in the contest… so the only thing that remain to comment is the technical aspect, which is basically gien by the rendering of the fire taking up 90% of the picture and the little Fry there is to see.
Without a doubt the fire effects are all well done, especially those in the background and the one that looks as Fry’s mantel, it is a good mix of solidity and volatility. The fire that is on-in Fry’s hand, tough, is not done as well, because it seems to be lacking the strength of the fire in the other places and it doesn’t look like it’s sparking from or enveloping Fry’s hand, more like overlapping it. It’s a problem because imho that was the most distinctive part of the picture and should have been given much more work. Fry himself looks menacing, which is a bit OOC for him, but that can pass, I guess he’s having power drunkness Big Grin Also, his hair is longer but is still hair, I would have expected something more creative being done on it given the few elements characterizing the picture.
All in all, I’m sorry but I can’t give this picture an above sufficiency vote, because the idea is rather plain and there is not plot, no reason or even not enough interesting details to comvey the spirit of the competition. The fire effects are well done as said but that’s not enough to keep it up.. better luck next time!
I grade this pic with 5.

5 Graham –Morris and Munda – Divinity of Earth

Ouch, this is hard for me to judge! I can see that there is a plot going on and there is a lot of creativity in it, but I plain simply cannot understand what does it mean… I am amazed by the very courageous choice of using a very peculiar color palette (it is definitely about Earth, that doesn’t need a lot of analyzing to say), by the original idea of hiding the two characters (Morris and Munda) in the landscape itself. The tree-Munda is especially impressive thanks to Beb’s coloring skills.
Leela looks like unwilling, almost scared (is she crying too? I cannot point that detail out), but I keep getting the feeling that I am missing something in the whole picture… that there is a plot and I cannot seem to see it, I have a couple ideas but I cant be sure of any without more “guidance”. I can just think of Leela’s parents being turned to tree and stone because of their new condition and her being sad about having lost them, which is rather deep.
So although the picture is rather obscure to me I keep being impressed by the sheer amount of detail and from the wholesome “earthly” mood of the complete picture.
What can I say? I don’t get it (fully), but I like it!
After lots of thought, I give this picture a 7,9 because technically it’s impressive and I can see the deity  theme in it, almost like one of those ancient tales of vindicative gods turning people into things Tongue, but it’s a bit too obscure.

6 Beb – Lrrr – Divinity of Love

Another tough picture… let’s start with the easy to judge part, the technical qualities!
This is Beb’s second entry for the competition, and it’s a strong entry from the pure skill point of view, although not even coming close to Zoidberg’s perfection, but still providing some amazing classy touches, like the soft velvety semi transparent drapes, the texture of the picture (even reflecting light as an oil painting would do!).
There is a lot of contrast not only chromatic (the purple and the siclkly green of the aliens) but also in the whole spirit of the picture, and I’m sure Cargo decided to go for this kind of contrast between the cute happy sappy feelings coupled with the idea of Love and the un-slightlyness of Lrrr. Even for this, the little wings as much as the flowery crown and the wand are a ure genius touch, making the picture so much more hilarious.
The problem is that even though the picture is funny, I can’t really see Lrr as a divinity of love. It is a splendid joke, it made me laugh out loud the first time I saw it, but is not really fitting the main theme of the competition. All considered though, it’s still a more than sufficient picture for the technical qualities and for the courage of such an “outrageous” choice.
Grade: 6,8 !

7 Amirel – Farnsworth – Divinity of Underworld

The main problem with this picture is imho the opposite of the ones not having anything going on. This one has even too much going on, detracting the viewer from the main point being of the picture, which would be Farnsworth and his “divinity” status quo. Maybe it’s based on an episode or on some situation that I am not aware of, but I can’t seem to understand what’s going on between Leela, the bald guy and that dragon-like creature. There doesn’t seem to be a connection with Professor F. sleeping (how appropriate!) in his Throne.
As for Burns in the Simpsons Team, the choice of Professor Farnsworth is very fitting the role, the particular of him wearing slippers is genius and cracked me up, while the rest of his clothing is appropriate for such a deity. Also the throne is rich of details.
Technically the picture is above average, with well on model characters, a nice 3d-feel to the background, a good chromatic choice with darker brown fading to lighter yellow on the surface, the good shading on the monster and the characters (especially the bald guy’s clothing looks impressively realistic).
It’s a pinch to grade this, as with Graham’s entry.. I see there is a lot going on, but in the Competition’s theme there’s just Farnsworth being funny, so I don’t think I can grade this being much more than… 7.

8 Dr. X – Bender – Divinity of War

Had this pic not have Bender’s “face” in it, it would be a wonderful epic-like picture of an apocalypse knight or something like that. It has astounding detail , great little ideas (the dragon – horse looks great!) and a very fiery mood to it. The problem is… that Bender has really nothing to do with such things in my opinion, he looks a bit out of place in a picture like this. Change Bender’s head with any character and it could be pretty much anyone’s war divinity wearing armor. It would have been better-funnier if Bender kept his usual boring and funny cylinder-shaped body, burping fire and gambling over the results of bloody wars all over the world, adding a bit of his character to the whole concept of the picture, but like this it’s a bit.. anonymous. I hope you understand that I do like the picture, but seeing it under the goals of the competition, it doesn’t provide about that.
Also, the fact that the picture is not colored or shaded does not help in bringing up the grade for it… it wouldn’t be fair in respect to the other participants who spent their time to ink and color their pictures, sorry, but I can’t give this more than a 4. It could’ve been sufficient had it been colored, so try harder next time Wink
