I've been bored this week and I just got a spiffy copy of 'The Simpsons Handbook' (which, ironically, is quite a handful!) so I figured I'd give it a whirl. Two attempts and several frustrating hours of work have resulted in my first halfway decent sketch of Lisa! The problem is, I have no scanner or digital camera, my only idea at the moment is my cameraphone (Motorola V262, I think, maybe it's a 385). How would I, assuming it's possible, go about getting a picture from the phone to here?

most phones nowadays have either a dock style connector or a usb connector. In most cases you just plug the phone into USB and it appears as a drive in My Computer, Although some cases you need the phone sync software from the phone manufacturer to do this. I am not 100% sure about Motorola. I my last phones were iPhone, Sony Ericsson & MDA III which use direct USB connection. Some phones come with the nessisaty cable in box while others you need to buy it. Another option if the phone has bluetooth is to buy a Bluetooth dongle. You can then use the bluetooth software on the phone and PC to Sync to the PC. For example the Motorola 385 the USB Connector is on the side: The USB cable usually also can charge the phone too, depending on the phone and sometimes the computer. Some phones also have an email function so you can email the picture. Though some only email text.

Thankee, Carl! 385 is the model I have (262 was the last phone). It gives me the option of sending it to an Online Album but I have no idea how to access it from a computer...meh, I'll probably get a cheap USB and wrestle with the public terminals at the library. But I'll need to color it first. That reminds me, what shade is their skin? It'll probably be done with colored pencils (or crayons if I can make it home without eating 'em...), so any tips/suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Online Album sounds like a service provided by your mobile service provider. Uaually you upload pictures via the phone to the MSP's member site.
Best thing is to visit the MSP's website and look on thier site. You generally need to login to the site so you need to register. This usually gives instructions if they provide the online album service (not all do).

Well, the album is giving me fits so I've just got one to share at the moment. Nothing complicated and it sent it sideways for some reason... *shrugs* Anywho, here's my first 'Handbook' assisted Lisa! (sorry for the small size/low quality/crappiness/ect )

It may not be visible on the snapshot, but I did at least attempt to follow the rules for construction laid out in the book. Though I do admit to tracing the construction circles for her head and body to get the right proportions. The hair was surprisingly easy once I realized that the right edge of one spike was supposed to be on a nearly identical plane to the left side of one three away. I'll eventually post an example once I figure out how to upload more than one image to that album. Thanks Carl!

Got it! The first is a close-up of Lisa's head where I've lightly added in the lines I mentioned in the post above. The second is the same drawing next to the reference picture in the book. Eh, I'm still off model, but it's a start. And I still need to color it.

It's always a good way to learn..... Ihave learned a bit from tracing certain bits. Once you get these basics out the way and drawing rules it becomes easier to draw each time freehand. Also depends what type of art you are looking to do too, be it freehand, computer aided ect. Are you ever planning on doing anything on the computer? If so Suusje posted an excellent guide awhile back which got me started doing proper stuff, the first drawing i posted in my old clunky method and fron them on I learned a lot. http://www.lisa-simpson.net/topic/41.0Even if not planning on drawing in flash or something you move on to later it is a good thread to read! I am not very good at drawing people and animals myself, I am more of a technical drawer which is ahy a lot of my pics have buildings, technology ect in. The characters I draw are made up of shapes ect in flash so i get away with it (well I hope I do) in this way. And I am lazy lol. I did have some pictures I drew of buildings around crawley somewhere. I may still have them. My school artwork (i got an A) sadly was destroyed in a fire at the school.

I was heavy into Marvel-esque (comics and such) years ago so I am familiar with how shapes and lines can be used to imply a solid object. I'm also familiar with perspective and such to make backgrounds appear to have depth. If I apply myself, eventually I'd like to try and turn some of my stories into comic form, though I'm a long way from doing anything that huge! I think it would be cool to try DoaS in that form since each chapter could easily make one issue.

DoAS would be completely awesome as a comic. the amount of chapters would work well as a series.
If you do need help in future, probably with backgrounds ect. I may be able to give some assistance is something like this goes ahead.

I'm having a hard time seeing the picture clearly, since it's a little too small... Anyway, by what I'm seeing, I think you have talent. Your first Lisa pic is very well done... (Damn you for drawing Lisa's hair at first try! Her hair always takes me a couple of minutes to draw... And when I'm done, I'm not satisfied with it. But this isn't about me.) Anyway, keep them coming!
