There can be only one Snake and one Big Boss
WWW
« on: May 17, 2008, 22:25 »

Hey folks,

I'm working on a theme for SMF Called "Around the World in 80 Settings" It's my biggest theme, feature wise to date.

It features a hell of a lot of new strings, and I want to go into as much detail with it as possible, and one of those details is translations by default. And the thing about that is I am only able to take care of English and English British by myself.

So a little help with translating the strings into other languages would be really appreciated.

Attached are the two English language files for the theme. To translate simply translate the messages between ' and '; ('Lisa';) if there is an apostrophe then escape it with a backslash before it Lisa's => Lisa\'s. You can also attach your name in place of mine in Settings.language.php as credit, and credit will also be provided to you when I release the theme on the SMF Theme Site.

Regards
Gary M. Gadsdon
Theme Developer, Around the World in 80 Settings

As for programming all I know is some basic HTTP, but I do know how to make translations! ^-^
Everything should be in order, but as with all translation, things may be a little bit off. The only thing that I feel I didn't really get a grip on was
$txt['colour_desc'] = 'This is the default country for the theme, this setting will only operate if the Country Toggle Box is selected above. You can purchase more countries from <a href="http://multitalk2.com" target="_blank">MT2-Soft</a>.'
I'm not really sure what this "Country Toggle Box" is, and I definitely don't see it above in this particular file... if you tell me what exactly this is, I may be able to tweak the translated text so that it won't look clumsy. (if it does)

Also translated your referrals to the Simpsons game and those other things not in ' ', go ahead and change those back if you didn't want em translated. =p

Enjoy in any case. z_Z

Heh. Yeah, DONT translate the comments marked with a // please.

The country toggle box is a box that allows you to select which country you want the forum to take as it's design, like England's design will be whites and reds, Scotland will be Blues and whites, Germany will be Black, Yellow and Red for example.

Here's a VERY EARLY shot of it in action (keep in mind, that none of the actual designing is complete, this theme is being built off of my previous theme, Big Super Happy Fun Fun)

Thanks for the translations anyhow.

EDIT: Looks like I forgot to add a string, can you translate

$txt['change'] = 'Change';

as well please.

Cheers,
Gary

Enjoy!

+ Kasper provided a Swedish translation (Settings.swedish.php, ThemeStrings.swedish.php)

Cheers.

EDIT: And for languages that use non-latin characters, translation of the word "new" would also be beneficial.

I will do a German translation. What's "$txt['ff'] = 'HP';" - Horsepower? Health Points? Harry Potter? Hewlett Packard? Also, in which file should I add "Change" and "New" translations? Should I use "Du" (personal you) or "Sie" (formal you) as appellation, or use a neutral form?

Health Points. I basically made that setting a collection of video game names for "health" and HP was one of them when I was making Big Super Happy Fun Fun.

Add
$txt['change'] = 'Change';
to ThemeStrings.language.php (since it's loaded everywhere rather than just the settings screen) just after the list of countries.

As for "you" it's not referring to the admin on a personal level, so I think a formal version would be best.

EDIT: I suck. Oh well, I had to add another string to the end of ThemeStrings.

$txt['none'] = 'None';

That seems about right. Cool.

+ Andreas contributed the German translation (ThemeStrings.german.php, Settings.german.php)

Cheers.

$txt['none'] = 'None';
I can add that, need to know in what context again though. Tongue "None" translates as ingen/inget/inga

None as in "Nobody" (heck you could even translate nobody instead if you wanted to) Tongue

For future language packs, here's updated English files, for current packs, I can just move stuff around as required.

By the way, here's the screen with the settings in action: http://babysimpson.co.uk/staff/gary/ThemeSettings.png
