How much knows Lisa, don't you asked oneself such a question while watching another episode of hers? Everytime I see her another "flash" of intellect I wonder: is her knowlege really too deep in any aspect she metions? Yes, I understand that there's a plenty of moments that she cannot know by any circumstances; such as special areas of complex jobs, like an expert, programmer and such... Still I'm intersting what a baggage of information she gather at her present age. There's only two moments I want to say about. Yet, she's like a "walking encyclopaedia" and we know that though such heavy books consists of huge amount of articles, it's profundity is very limited. Maybe and Lisa has such very general view of the majority of things in this world to talk about it? Especially with the people of Springfield who's not so well-educated in general? And Decland Desmond from "Scuse Me While I Miss The Sky" saw it clearly and says it to her during their first meting. And one more point. There was a times when some information she talks about doesn't depend of her own description. Such a moment when she presents to Alex Whitney from "Lard of the Dance" episode their local school sights (the tree ) She realises that there's not too much to show to newbie, but can't do much and feels herself inconvenient. How do you think this quality of her character is useful to her - to feel a kind of guilty after the things in this world, that never depends of her efforts? I think it's rather bad habit, imparted by her parents, Marge especially.

Lisa is very intelligent, but I always thought so not because she's well-read and "knows everything", she's just... just wise from the birth. She knows what is good and what is bad, and where the separating line is going. She knows how to admit mistakes, she knows how to forgive. To be honest, I never considered her that "walking encyclopedia", for the Simpsons merits (Homer's especially) she probably is, but she's not a library. For example, I'm pretty sure she's bad at computers. P.S. Yay, a Lisa-dedicated topic!

DagdamorYay indeed. I mostly agree with Serge here, Lisa is not so much book-smarts as she is "aware" of things. I think this awareness (social, moral, etc.) contributes to her factual knowledge. In other words, she knows how important it is to know things, and so realizes the benefits of things such as reading, art, school, and so forth. I believe all of her intelligence simply comes from a highly advanced maturity level.

DagdamorI'm pretty sure she's bad at computers Hey, how could you? She reads "Wired" magazine, knows a lot about internet, understands what c:/dos/run means , uses computer to write articles and so on, I'm sure she's good enough. Yes, she's not a programmer, but for 8 years old girl she's brilliant YggdrasillI don't know, could someone expect more from a girl of her age, I don't support Desmond very much. But it's funny: in "Bart's comet" episode everyone from nerds' society had a special nickname coming from special area of knowledge, except Lisa. As for me, people, who are genius in their limited areas of knowledge, are more interesting, then people who are interested in everything. But at the other point, studying now and gathering information from different areas, Lisa would choose her life path better, than boys and girls, who know not so much about world. So, she has more abilities for future. And of course, it's better when knowledge isn't just a bunch of useless facts, but brings some profit, being properly used -for example, when Lisa saved Homer's life. And it's important, that she knows, how to study. I mean, she can study well, and if she'll finally choose any narrow object to learn, she would reach awesome results. As for feeling guilty - sometimes she does this, but sometimes not For example, in case of USA - when Odil Hoxna came to Simpsons house, she defended USA, even dispite some imperfections, but when she flied to England, she've chosen to pretend she's from Canada. But in case with nature, her actions in that way hurt her - I've written many times here about that moment in "Wife Aquatic", when she was terribly sad because she unintentionally inspired people to clean the forest from trees And you're right - partially this strain came to Lisa from Marge. I suppose, when she would leave home for college, making friends with different people, she'll became more... cynical, probably. I suppose she must be a little more cold-hearted to be able to find best way to make all things in this world better.

brakusaetsyaSometimes people who know a lot about everything can make the people they're with feel small, even if they don't mean to. I'm reminded of a line from L.A. Story (one of my favorite movies, by the way) where Steve Martin is taking his (girl)friend around to see the sights in L.A., and he tells her "You know, normally I don't like being around interesting people, because that means I have to be interesting too." I think that it's good to be interesting at times, but to know when to draw the line between interesting and arrogant. If you know too much about everything, you end up appearing snobbish. I think this may also contribute to the anti-social attitude of Lisa. Whether or not she is a snob about her intellect, her peers may have labeled her this way. And so she is somewhat of an outcast at her school. Blah, I'm rambling.

brakusaetsyaHehe But in the "Simpson Moon", Lisa doesn't even know what 404 error is! And there never was "run" subfolder in the "c:\dos" folder, and "run\dos\run" makes no sense unless you know about that "Run Spot Run" poem. Of course I was just stating an example of that Lisa cannot know everything.

DagdamorWell, wise from the birth seems to sound a bit loud. For it is so unbelievable that toddler Lisa has some knowledge how to do in life even not gathering the information about the world. But it fits her character, though looks like a little fancy. I never thought too much about her early moments of life, so it seems to be so fantastic to me. As for computers - she's at the level of good user, not so much adult people do this. Remember how she intalled computer for her father (and again, after taking it from the thrash can ) Of course maybe she don't know all about the boot-sectors, msdos.sys and such special areas for it's just obsolescent today. GeorgeHarrisonTo realise the necessity of knowing well is not the only reason. She seems to take pleasure from study. And if you consider her intelligence only like a consequense of moral maturity, then how it could be joined with the fact that she's always has a free time while her homework ready? I mean to get all the knowledge that she has she must learn all the day long, staying in her room and reading the smart books And one more. While saying on her getting snobbish, you said it adds to her anti-social side. And it's quite interesting to hear. Is it really so bad not to be a centre of everyone's attention? Everyone has it's own abilities to communicate and there's people who's more sociable, and the ones who's less. What really significant motive's need the person to communicate with others, except the getting information from them? brakusaetsyaYou said she can study well, and I just wonder. What if she doesn't as smart as she seems to be? It's not an easy thing to imagine, especially for a person like she. She must put a huge efforts to learn all this facts. When compared with Alison Taylor she was not so brilliant. And do not forget that almost any pupil can put oneself as "smart" in the second grade. Just the syllabus is quite easy to learn, not like in the high-grades, or the university. No, I don't changed my opinion and still I think she's the smartest one in the Springfield. Just an assumption..

Yggdrasill Hm. Okay, I agree, she's good at computers. But she's not good at... uhm... animal preparation! About "wise from the birth" - here is a screenshot proving it, little Lisa making a horse:

YggdrasillWell, probably it's quite easy to be the best in Springfield elementary 2nd grade, I agree. And maybe she isn't a genius. But, as you said, she works a lot. And she is interested in many things, and she keeps this interest even despite her teachers are ignorant, often she hasn't a challenge. Let's say atmosphere aroung her isn't the best for learning, but she knows importance of knowledge and she is ready to work hard, I appreciate this very much. Someone, whom I don't remember said that success made 1% of talent and 99% of hard work. If Lisa wouldn't lose all interest, all energy she has now, it'll be easy for her to become best at high grades and university. ------ What really significant motive's need the person to communicate with others, except the getting information from them? You really think so? How she would be able to work somewhere without ability to communicate with people normally? Well, maybe Lisa will choose a job where social skills aren't so important, but still, being snobbish hurts her. Remember "Jazzy and Pussycats"? "You're the second best player appear. In case you wonder who the best one is, it's me"... And then she was disappointed and led to depression Great expectations bring great disillusionments, and in this world there is always someone who is better than you DagdamorWell, it's not just after the birth Lisa was interested in ponies, since she was a toddler, probably, she watched a lot of tv-programs about horses, that's why she knows their proportions and was able to make such realistic model. It's not a gift she received from birth, well, probably she just inherited some strains that help her to learn easily (from Marge or with a little help of Simpsons' female genes).

brakusaetsyaStill I think that in our present time it's kinda ... pointless. If you are good hmm graphic designer for example, you'll do the work much better than any amateur. While such an amateur will reach the present skills of a designer by heart, the last one will reach another high level, unachievable now. So it kinda of rush when one member has an unquestionable advantage before the another one. But I never will say that the struggle is pointless in any way. Lisa with her hunger for knowledge and childish legerity is in the very beginning of her own life to built. And we will never know exaclty what the way she will choise. And to say honestly I'm even glad to know it, a year ago I longed to know her future, now it means nothing for me It's her own life and she uses it as she thinks the best. "and she keeps this interest even despite her teachers are ignorant, often she hasn't a challenge."I'm curious and today what makes her to continue her learnings, to struggle against the circumstances and how to attain such state of mind. Am I loss it somewhere in my childhood when I was afraid to do the opposite the teachers and parents? But in my case it was not the acknowledgement of the importance of learning, it was rather habit. While Lisa's way seems to mean much more wider. Is it really only Marge's contribution? To say honestly I always thought that Lisa's decency is firstly her... female quality rather than personal. "And then she was disappointed and led to depression Great expectations bring great disillusionments, and in this world there is always someone who is better than you"In such case I think it's very useful not to know too much The knowledge is hard especially if you know that at the end the defeat awaits you...
