The forum's certainly running running nice and fast for me. The new section is a good idea too, I reckon you must have inspired some people

Just to get more technicall, SMF 1.1 Final has been released. you might wanna upgrade. The CAPTCHA has been fixed to make it easier, and there have been a couple of options to combat PM spam, along with a whole load of other bugs. Since you have (what is technically now a mod) installed, you're better off using the UPGRADE pacakge on the download page. Or you can take the quicker way and use Webinstall.php Simple Machines

Yeah, I already know. Received the letter saying the same a couple of days ago. Well, I might consider update, but not right now. When the new software comes out, it's always better to wait some time before upgrading to it - let other people test it in the real circumstances.

Well, I've installed 1.1 at my forum, and so far, it seems to work fine. The upgrade was as easy as usual.

Added a little feature to the forum - now, if you click on someone's username (the link above his avatar), that username will be copied to the Quick Reply box. Useful thing when you're addressing your post to someone.

I have a small notion. Its not exactly technical but, certainly boring. This smilie ' ' doesnt really look like an 'EEK!' expression, more of a shocked expression like a speachless 'WOW' impression. This smilie ' ' looks like its yawning, rather than 'unsure' And lastly this smilie ' ' looks unsure. Still looks like rolling eyes but, also looks like its looking up as a thought. Might just be me, anyone else think that way?

Heh, you're right of course... but it won't be an easy thing to fix. If I will just replace, say, : eek : code used for the smiley with something else, all already used smilies of this kind will stop displaying properly... I will have to replace all smilie codes in all posts on the forum!

There's also the issue that future upgrades might change the smilie's appearance from time to time, meaning that the code will have to be altered every single time... Just use the one that looks right and don't worry about the code you need to type it

Added a little feature to the forum - now, if you click on someone's username (the link above his avatar), that username will be copied to the Quick Reply box. Useful thing when you're addressing your post to someone. Actually, I prefer it that when clicking someones username, I go to their profile. Maybe have that as an on/off setting in the Look and Layout Section of the profile? There's also the issue that future upgrades might change the smilie's appearance from time to time, meaning that the code will have to be altered every single time...
Upgrades dont edit current data, they only add new tables, rows etc... to the database if they are not present, so all the smilie codes will be left un touched. However, since Dag has uploaded these smilies into the default folder, a major (1.0 => 1.1 or RC3 => 1.1) upgrade will overwrite them. Uploading into default, classic, or babylon folders are often not a good idea because an upgrade will overwrite them. It is always better to use a new directory for any custom smilies, themes etc... Minor updates which can be installed in the package manager (1.1.1 => 1.1.2) more often than not, dont.

ALMActually, I prefer it that when clicking someones username, I go to their profile. Maybe have that as an on/off setting in the Look and Layout Section of the profile? Sorry, I'm too used to that feature... maybe I will add that option someday, but right now it stays as is. Just use the icon when you click on someone's username and you see that nothing happens I wonder if 1.1.2 is worth upgrading to it... I've heard they are going to release 2.0 soon In other news: I added a very little feature to the forum - a list of recent posts in the format convenient to use from PHP scripts. Something like RSS, but in serialized form instead of XML format. Here's the link to that page (it's useless for viewing, but useful for reading from your scripts). Read the file with the file_get_contents(), unserialize() it and you'll have the regular PHP array. You can also specify the number of posts ( example).

They?! Doc Writer right here. 1.1.2 is definatly worth the upgrade. It has better PM options over RC3, you can specify how many posts a person much have otherwise they'll have to pass CAPTCHA, also you can limit the number of all PM's per hour. It also has better CAPTCHA options in general. You can set from Very Simple plain blue text with no noise in a box to High to coloured text in no box with noise. To upgrade to 1.1.2 you will have to do it manually since RC3 is that far out of date, on the SM.org download page, select the LARGE UPGRADE package, upload all the files in there and then run upgrade.php (now you see why overwriting the theme/smilie default files yourself is not a good idea ) once on 1.1.2 upgrading there after (1.1.3 etc...) is pretty simple via the package manager. 2.0 Beta 1 is planned for release in June but is exclusive to Charter Members only, but dont hold us to that, meaning that you'll have to fork money for it, but you do get other stuff like team installs/upgrades and one on one support too . The first public beta is planned for October, but dont hold us to that either. 2.0 is a MAJOR step up from 1.1 where every mod will need to be updated as well as every theme too, for mods its because of the Abstraction layer for the PostgreSQL and SQLite support, and themes because all the language strings have been renamed into something meaningful.

ALMI see, thanks for the explanations I will perform an upgrade soon then. Why not now, you'll ask? Because after installing 1.1, I did many small patches to the code here and there, and added several new features and pages. I doubt that regular upgrade will work as expected now. What I want to do, is to create something like a "service pack" for SMF that fixes all small things I need and adds new features, and to design it as a mod (or few separate mods). Then I will re-install 1.1.2 from scratch and apply that mod to be sure that nothing has screwed up. It will take some time, but imho this is how things should be done. Of course I will do all that locally, and will reupload files only when all maintenance is finished, so don't worry, LTS won't stop working.

If I were you, I'd create a copy of your theme and smiles and put them into a new directory first. (to create a copy of your theme, download it, and then create a new folder in the Themes directory, and upload the EDITED files into there (from the looks of things its index.template.php, Display.template.php and Post.template.php) and images, into that folder and then go Admin > Themes and Layout > Install a New Theme > From a directory on the server > [ENTER] > Save) and for the smilies (Admin > Smileys and Message Icons > Smiley Sets > New Smiley Set > [check] Import smileys already in this directory > Save) Doing that prevents you from you've made to the defaults during upgrading, because you MUST replace all the defaults when upgrading which is why its best not to add your own custom edits. Then take ALL the tweaks you've made to the Sources files and package those as a mod ( Package SDK, anyone?) and the theme files also. Then install via the Package Manager as per usual. May sound like a bit much but heck, I gotta do alot worse since I gotta upgrade to 2.0. -ALM
