Title: This can't go on any more!
Post by: Dagdamor on September 03, 2008, 01:10
Holy freaking goddamn it, the server was down almost whole day yesterday.
And when it went up again, there were errors in few database tables I've fixed only now.
I can't bear this anymore... I'm going to buy another hosting for LTS and, probably, for ISFF too. Does anyone have experience in that? I will need some help... :(

Yeah this is the first time I've been able to log on in about a day... I figured the server was having some major problems. Unfortunately computers, especially something like running a forum, aren't my strong point... so I'll step aside and let someone else take the floor.

You're not the only one who's been having server problems. I've been having some issues of my own, but hey, at least I didn't need to repair any tables. :P

*in the same boat as GH*
It's frustrating but don't put yourself out too much, Serge!

(For some odd reason I've always wanted to have that name... maybe I've played through Chrono Cross too much...:P)

I'm sorry that i can't provide any decent solution :(

But if we talk about LTS only, it's a rather small board, not too heavy in bandwith terms, so a small hosting could be fine and not too expensive. Problem is, i don't know any! I was thinking of using my home server as a backup, but my upload speed is crap (~35KB/s)and would be useless.

I don't know anything about ISFF, but LTS shouldn't need too many resources, so it could be hosted on a rather cheap webspace package. How many webspace and traffic do we need? Host Europe offers a package with 500 MB webspace, two databases, PHP and other script support and 50 GB traffic per month for 2.99 EUR per month. The .net domain costs an additional 1 EUR per month.

Seems to be working alright today.
*slaps the forum on the rump*

Just needed a little elbow-grease! :D

Thanks for replying people... I'm checking some hosting companies these days.

But I remember you once posted an .mp3 track (with Lisa/Smith interview) and asked us not to share it too much because heavy traffic can cause problems. LTS will produce much more traffic than that file...

Okay... :) can you create a virtual host for LTS then (connected to "lisa-simpson.net" and "www.lisa-simpson.net" domains)? We need:
- about 300 Megs of disk space;
- PHP;
- .htaccess and mod_rewrite enabled;
- one empty MySQL database.
I also need your server's IP and an FTP account. :p

If you can do that, please send me FTP/MySQL connection info via PM. I'll check the hosting and if it works okay, will gradually move LTS on it.

I concur!

Though I haven't had any problems for over 2 days now. Something must've been fixed. Well done!

You're always riding him about this. :P

It has been awhile since an update though, hasn't it? And what about that logo we were looking at back in February? How's that uhh... going to fit in/work out?

LTS hasnt been updated at all. I'm always going on about it as there have been dozens of issues found and fixed since SMF 1.1 RC3, 1.1 went final almost two years ago, and has since gotten five update packages.

Due to that, the only way for an upgrade to either 1.1.5 or 2.0 Beta 3.1 Public (2.0 has more features and multi-database support for MySQL, PostgreSQL and SQLite) is the LARGE UPGRADE package on the download page.

And upgrading to 1.1 when it came made things so much easier when 1.1.1 and so on were released as they can be added in the package manager which can not be done otherwise. NOT upgrading causes loads of problems, and I dont think that five minutes to make an upgrade is a lot.

IRC Channel was supported by the same server as which was hosting ISFF... the server is still down, so... no chat for poor Lisahuggers ;)
If the chatroom is still alive (i.e. there are members who still like to chat there), we can move the chatroom to another server/channel.

i'm sure it would be nice to have it just in case, but it's not a priority...
