Title: Good drawing skill Post by: Empethree on July 03, 2008, 02:11 OK most drawings I have seen done in MS Paint <shudders> have looked very basic, flat and downright ugly, due to the lack of effects, brushes and tools. (There have been other exceptions of course). When i started to watch this video I thought... here we go.. another silly kid thinking his 16 colour drawing looked "realistic" but as the video unfolded, i was amazed at his skill with the lack of extra tools ect.

Looks interesting, but I've seen such things before... it never seems to be a "spontaneous" drawing, more looks like "reading a speech from paper" to me. Also, the result doesn't look too realistic, and the author has made an awful lots of mistakes he had to fix afterwards. ;) I've watched only the first video though, the one with iPod, maybe others are better. What is the point of using old fashion mouse and MS Paint? I mean, do they have to much time? Best tools and best drawing devices make us able to do better and faster realistic or very good looking detailed pictures... I MUST say, the oint of drawing is to show other people the images in our mindes as good and detailed as possible. A mind-picture machine would be fantastic, but although artwork loses clarity when it goes from a mental image to an expressed piece, it also gains something because the people who have these images care enough about them to want to try and get them down on paper. Needless to say, MSPainting an iPod isn't the most exciting artwork in the world, but it's a nice exercise in photorealism – which is hard enough as it is without the limits of MSPaint. In this case, I think that the artist was looking for a challenge rather than a quick way to get a mental image out. The two most important things in art in my opinion has always been, the Idea, and the Skill. The end result is realistic and, quite amazing how such a simple program availible on almost every PC can create these results.
And ofcourse, we dont know the 'Image' the artist had in his mind Frank, so this might either be perfect or way off ;) We'll never know. He did it just for the sake of a challenge, not for the fact that there is easier tools out there. His other drwings on DA he uses other packages.
Hell some of the drawings I have done there is easier methods than what i use, but I like the time spent creating and redoing and reworking bits and pieces until I get it correct. The last 2 pictures I have are not using my tablet at all, just for the sake of trying a different tecnique to get the desired results. The flipside of the argument some could argue that the real skill is in drawing like he has done rather than using the brushes and wizards used in PS ect. hmm, better say something. No, really, I think you should do what you like best. I personally like Paint, maybe because I've never used Photoshop :D You can do most things with it, but sometimes you need another program. That's when I stop or do a workaround... Often it's not that important since I don't really draw images on my computer. |
